Though her favourite colour may be pink, Kayla is not your typical gal. With a kickass marketing degree from Concordia and a can-do attitude, we’ve watched her grow from intern to marketing coordinator overcoming every challenge thrown her way – and then some.
So Kayla tell us, what was your academic and professional background before starting at Laura?
This is my first permanent position! So Laura really did kickstart my career. Before my Laura summer internship I was completing my bachelor’s degree in marketing at John Molson School of Business, Concordia University. I really monopolized on my time at school, taking part in multiple student associations and working at various marketing internships over the summers!
What does a marketing coordinator do?
The marketing department oversees the creation of print marketing material. This includes anything from in-store signage to store window banners, advertising, brochures, coupons, mailers – the list goes on. My job as marketing coordinator is to work with the many teams and departments, such as visual merchandising, construction and the e-commerce studio, all with the aim of briefing our graphic designers to create something amazing. I take care of Laura, while my colleague Rima oversees the Melanie Lyne brand!
You were part of our summer 2017 intern program. What made you decide to apply here?
I’ve always wanted to work in fashion! The program sounded incredibly exciting and I knew it would be a great way to learn more about the company. After my first interview I could already see myself fitting in at Laura.
What is the biggest difference between life as an intern and a full-time employee?
The biggest change would be the increase in responsibilities. You’re no longer under someone’s wing, which means you have to be extremely resourceful. I’m now in charge of my own projects and held accountable for the end result. It’s exciting and definitely a step up!
What is the most important thing you got from your internship?
That going above and beyond what is expected of you goes a long way!
How do you see yourself progressing in the Laura world?
Laura is in a really exciting period of growth at the moment. I want to contribute to that by learning as much as I possibly can, and by improving every single day. I want to give 100% of my abilities at all times.
