Peter has been the head of the accounting and payroll team at Laura Canada’s head office for the past three years. We recently asked him a few questions about what his role entails.
Hello Peter, can you explain what your position is at Laura Canada?
As the senior payroll and accounting manager, I’m in charge of the payroll and accounting team. I’m responsible for the company’s financial statements, and I’m often the resource person for any accounting questions. Part of my job is also to verify that the company complies with Canadian tax laws and agreements with our bank.
On a day-to-day basis, I approve and sign cheques and transfers from our suppliers. With the help of the payroll team, I oversee the payment of our employees across the country. I present the financial results to senior management and keep track of all expenses. Finally, my team and I are in charge of store inventory. We’re the go-to people for any questions about external audits.
What did you do before joining our team three years ago?
Before joining the team, I worked in the food and petroleum industries. I’ve held senior financial analyst and process improvement consultant positions at Sobeys Canada, Shell and Canada Bread.
What aspects of your job do you like the most?
I really like the analytical side of my job. Not to mention the negotiations for new funding and the continuous updates in financial reporting that make my work stimulating.
So far, what has been your biggest challenge and what are you most proud of?
I’m very proud to say that my team and I have implemented processes to improve the production and quality of financial reports. In addition, we’ve passed all external audits.
What are you looking forward to this year?
Continuing to improve processes within the company while ensuring compliance with accounting norms. I’m also looking forward to staying on the lookout for changes in the field.
