Filled to the brim with wisdom and a background in photography to match, Mima has many talents. As our much-loved category manager, Mima really excels. Find out what makes her tick…
What does a category manager do?
A category manager has many responsibilities—but luckily they’re fun ones! I’m the lead buyer on the team for Melanie Lyne. It’s my job to ensure that everything we buy is in line with the brand and falls into the various categories (or collections) that have been previously decided upon. The most important thing to achieve as a category manager is to ensure that the items purchased appeal to the target market.
How does your background in professional photography help you in this position?
My background has trained me to be visual and helped me see things with a sense of scale & proportion. It’s also made me pay attention to small details in a way that some might see as meticulous. I think this skill has aided me the most—because in this Industry it really is all in the details.
What has been your proudest career moment so far at Laura?
The moment I received news about my promotion to category manager! Starting as an assistant buyer and being recognized for my dedication and hard work gave me a great sense of pride—and continues to do so.
What has been your biggest challenge in your role?
Time is of the essence in the retail industry. We must keep up with the fast-paced rhythm of the fashion world, and with the speed at which it evolves, missing a beat can hurt your credibility as a leader.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in buying?
Be curious. Ask questions—and plenty of them. It’s important to seek feedback and comments, and always identify and chase opportunities. Finally, listen to that little voice inside your head, because more often than not it’s right.
What are you most looking forward to in 2018?
I always look forward to seeing the collections come to life in-store. I get great satisfaction from seeing the styles my team and I have carefully chosen being loved by our customers.
